Utah State form isn't accepting the 14 digit employer State ID number. How can I fix it?

Federal forms had no issues with the State ID numbers.

It won't really matter what you input in Box 15 Employer ID, as long as the software will accept it. What really matters is the Employer Federal EIN. You can try to leave Box 15 empty or if TurboTax program asks you for a state ID number in a specific format, then enter a value that conforms to that format.

@inspectorclayton

....someone somewhere in here said that the final three letters  (WTH ?) will take Ok if you use lower case "wth"

Just make sure you put in the first numbers and the final letters without a hyphen.

Thank You! We are trying this now. Spent 1.5 hours with an “experienced” Turbo Tax person in customer support last night and not a clue what to tell us. 🤪Good thing there is a community.

That didn't work for me. I don't remember what worked last year or the year before or the year before. I never expect it to happen again. I think I had to mail the filing the last several years. Changing the letters to lowercase didn't fix it this year. There were no hyphens in them. They're 14 characters with WTH as the last three. Literally TurboTax is making no sense on this, and I'm not seeing any other tax filers have this problem. The Utah State Tax Commission has never had any problem with my mail filings. I literally wanna rip all of my hair out and all of TurboTax's hair out too.

You might try deleting the W2 and starting again.  Coupled with the lower cased "wth" this should clear the error and allow the e-file.

  1. Revisit the "Job/W2" topic
  2. Delete the UT W2
  3. "Continue" to the summary page
  4. Click "Wrap up Income" at the bottom of the page
  5. "Revist" the "Job/W2" topic again
  6. Manually re-enter the form information.
  7. Enter the 14 characters with "wth" lower cased at the end
  8. Be sure in box 15 there are no extra spaces (delete/backspace as necessary)
  9. Complete the interview all the way through "Wrap up Income" again

I already tried that. The number matched what TurboTax said it needed to be.

However, at this point, I've already filed the federal taxes and it was noted as received by the IRS, so... now what?

If it has been received, you will need to wait for the IRS to process the return. @incoda

The IRS handled it fine. I had to file the Utah taxes on a printed form from TurboTax. Your software needs to either do the Utah tax form properly or at least show the actual problem if it's gonna show an error for it. Nowhere was the problem actually shown by TurboTax, just an inaccurate error message.

If box 15, State Employer ID, is blank on your W-2, your e-file return should still go through just fine, as long as there are no other errors on your return.  Your state department of revenue will be able to easily identify your employer from their 9-digit federal EIN, so the state ID number is a little redundant anyway, but is still a way that your state tracks employers in their internal state computer system.

If you are receiving an error for box 15, try using the federal ID in that box or if the state requires a particular format, such as ending in XYZ, then enter 99999999XYZ for the number of digits it specifies. In Utah, there should be 11 numerals followed by WTH (in capitols) with no dash.

If the error persists , try deleting the form and reentering it.  If you have "copied and pasted" to enter some of the information, it might have spaces or other invisible formatting characters that are causing the errors.  Please be sure there are no extra spaces before the entries or after the entries.  If you have imported into Turbo Tax, perhaps some of the data was damaged in the transfer and is not working properly, even if it looks correct on the page.  Deleting the W-2 and manually entering it should solve the problem.
