Turbotax online is saying it can't complete a calculation on my state return until I click the 'Check for Updates' in the online bar. I cannot find this option anywhere.

TurboTax Online should update on its own. It sounds like there may be a form that is required for your state return that is not available yet. You can check the status of your state's form availability here.
