TurboTax transfers federal AGI (1040 line 11) to IL 1040 line 1.
In Retirement Adjustment Smart Worksheet of IL 1040, TurboTax transfers 1040 line 5b (state pension benefit in our case) to box A, and 1040 line 4b (taxable amount of IRA distribution) to box B. Box C to G are blanks in our case. The total of box A and B is subtracted from State income on IL 1040 line 1. We also have nontaxable amount of IRA distribution but is not included in the adjustment, so effectively we have to pay state tax on NONTAXABLE IRA distribution. That makes no sense to me. State of IL does not tax IRA distribution at all.
I think the problem is with box B in Retirement Adjustment Smart Worksheet. It should come from 1040 line 4a (not 4b) instead. 1040 line 4a is entire IRA distribution.
Does anyone run into similar problem? Or am I mistaking something?
either you're reading your Illinois return incorrectly or you're doing something wrong because Illinois does not tax any retirement or social security income. However, annuity income is taxable but only to the extent taxable for federal purposes. the subtraction for any taxable portion of retirement or social security income is on line 5
