Turbo taz Error on NY state return

I'm trying to file my NY state return. At the last step there is a check that gives me an error for my 1099-R. It says:

Box 12a for electronic filing, New York State withholdings cannot be greater than or equal to gross distribution or state distribution.

Gross Distribution (box 1) is 6,200

Taxable amount (box 2a) is 6,200

State tax withheld (box 12a) is 620

State Distribution (box 14) on the 1099-R is blank which is what I think is causing the error. Can I just put 6,200 in TurboxTax?

Yes, you can change it, but double check your 1099-R, is box 14 blank?  If it is not blank, your fix would be to correct the data that was input for your 1099-R in TurboTax, here is how:

1. While in your Tax Home,
2. Select Search from the top right side of your screen,
3. Enter 1099-R,
4. Select Jump to 1099-R,
5. Correct Box 14 to add State Distributions..

Hi, did you ever resolve this?  I am having the same issue.  There was nothing populated in that box on the tax form and I cannot submit my tax returns because of this and everything is entered correctly.

@LGFS0815

It is nonsensical to have state tax withheld but report no state distribution.

Since it's New York, I have to wonder if the problem is that the issuer of the 1099-R knew that this distribution was not taxable in New York, so entered blank for the state distribution amount in box 14. But if that were the case, why did they withhold state tax?

It's just as likely that the issuer of the 1099-R simply failed to enter the appropriate number in box 14.

Have you called the issuer to ask if they made a mistake on the 1099-R? If they say "Yes", ask them why they withheld state tax if there was no state distribution.

Hi,

I had two separate 1099-R forms from the same issuer/account.  One was an account withdrawal, and the other was from a loan on repayment that defaulted once the account was withdrawn.  Not sure if this is the cause of the issue. The withdrawal had tax taken, but not the loan.  So one form has the box populated but the other does not.

Thanks.

Enter the number from box 1 also in box 16. The Federal and State Distribution amounts are the same.
