Turbo tax won’t let me E-file NY state tax return

After I have already paid the turbo tax fee of $40.00 to file my NY state taxes it stated I will have to mail them in. Yet according to NY mandate. If using tax prep software you Must e file. What is going on?  Please and thank you

Did you do a 401(k) withdrawal in 2020 for Covid-related purposes?  A bunch of us are having a problem with that for NY State.

@Zaned

The New York e-file mandate says that you are required to e-file your NY return IF "your software supports the electronic filing of your return." If TurboTax will not allow you to e-file, then it does not support electronic filing of your NY return. Therefore you are not required to e-file your NY return.

Respectfully, I do not even remotely trust some NYS bureaucrat to understand the subtle reason why TurboTax isn't letting me e-file.  I can see the return getting rejected out of hand with nary a glance, causing further headache and aggrevation....

@Scooby5  They don't reject mailed returns. And even though e-filing is "mandatory," there is no penalty for filing by mail. Just mail your New York tax return and don't worry about it.

That's cool that mail is a last resort option, but I really don't want to do it.  I would like to do the thing electronically through TurboTax, which I paid a lot of money to purchase.   Clearly a lot of people are having the same problem.  TurboTax, please let us know how we can resolve this situation.

@Scooby5  You haven't given any information about what is preventing you from e-filing your New York tax return. It would be better if you post a new separate question of your own, instead of tagging onto other people's questions. In your own question, include exactly what TurboTax says when it tells you that you cannot e-file the NY return.

I apologize for getting my threads mixed up.  The problem I and others are having when attempting to file NY State electronically is an error message that reads:

”Pension/Annuities/IRA Worksheet: Txble Pens/IRA(Reg Dist) We're still working on updates related to Retirement Distributions that qualify for disaster or covid relief. You can keep working on your return and we'll remove this message when it's ready.”

We have been told there is a workaround, but the workaround is not available to those of us who already electronically filed federal taxes since we may not edit once we have filed.

Can't file because decimal point not transferred from fed box 14 it asks for fix but  number was correctly entered. Turbotax will not  provide procedure to override error by the software transfer problem. How can I proceed.

Thank you and everyone else for your help. I don’t feel great about it. But I’ve gone ahead and mailed my Ny state taxes. I will keep y’all updated on how that turns out. I think I’m don’t with Turbo tax after this debacle.

@Zaned did you have any issues? I'm getting the error on 2022 taxes saying that because W2 witholding is higher than incoming, it must be manually mailed and verified with a physical W2.

You are commenting on a thread from 2 years ago. If the software is instructing you to mail it, you will need to print and mail your return.
