Turbo Tax Live in Mass work in RI W2 shows different amounts on State contribtions

I am filing tax first time as a resident of Ma working in RI

My W2 has Total State with one number 5000  and in State  section shows State RI with code and 4500.

What one should I use in Turbo Tax filing.. they dont have space  for two amounts on the same W2?

When entering a form W2 with multiple states you can add lines for additional states by clicking the "Add another State" box below the state lines showing for the W2.  Having said that, you may need to clarify your situation for more detailed guidance on entering your W2 information.

As you mention there is line for RI which needs to be entered as you will file a non-resident RI return with those wages allocated to RI.

Typically, your resident state does not withhold for out of state employers so there would be no state line to enter since there would be no withholding.  However, you mention there is RI with 4500 but total state showing is 5000.  Are those amounts in boxes 16 or 17?  Is there another state involved for 500 difference? or Did MA withhold the missing 500?

Basically, if the difference is a state withholding amount (box 17) then you would need to add a line for that state and that $500 withholding.

Your resident state will tax all the out-of-state wages (automatically without entering a state line if no withholding) but you would claim a credit for taxes paid to the other state to mitigate the double taxation.  You will find that credit in the credit topic in the MA state interview after completing the RI non-resident state interview.
