Turbo tax is using the Local income tax on my state return instead of the State Income tax. How do I correct that so I can efile?

In order to correct this so that you can file, revisit the W-2 entry.  Be sure that Box 17 is showing state tax withheld and Box 19 is showing local tax withheld.

Here's how to do this in TurboTax Online:

  • Navigate to Federal Taxes,  Wages & Income,  Job (W-2),  Add/Edit
  • On the next page select the W-2 has the local tax showing up on state, using the pencil icon
  • Continue through information about company
  • Then, correct the state and local wages and tax in boxes 15-20 on the screen "Now let's update the rest"

How can this be done in TurboTax Desktop? I have tried twice to delete and reenter the Box 15-17 data for each State (PA-Resident, NY-Non-Resident) but TT keeps using the PA Tax Withheld for the NY Tax Withheld in later screens.

To navigate to your W-2 entries in TurboTax Desktop, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on the Federal Taxes tab.
  3. Click on Wages & Income
  4. On your Income Summary screen, click Update next to Form W-2.
  5. Edit the W-2.
  6. Continue through the screens until you reach the Now let's update the rest.
  7. Scroll down to Box 15-17.
  8. Click the trash can icon to delete each entry.
  9. Click on Add another state to re-enter your W-2 information.

If this does not fix your error, I can take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

Please tag me in the thread so I can be alerted that you sent your token.
