TT wants me to download MA tax software (I'm a NY resident). The only ref to MA income is our NY 529 plan's 1099-Q distrib. (from a Boston bank, and the 1099-Q entry forces me to list MA for the state of the payer). Can I ignore?... or will TT make me file in MA? To test a theory, I "falsely" changed the state for the Boston bank (on the 1099-Q) to NY to see if the prompt went away, it did not.
Our son goes to school in Boston, and TT sees that from the 1098-T data I entered. However, last year he went to school in Ohio, and TT did not prompt us to file Ohio state taxes.
Why am I seeing this prompt? Will TT force me to download and file in MA (there is no reason to, as the income from our 529 plan is considered NY income)? I'd like to find a way to make the prompt to download the MA tax software go away, any ideas?
Thanks!
check this: In the personal info section, when it asks if you made money in another state, verify that you didn't accidentally say yes.. Also check the question where it asks if you lived in another state. This will prevent TurboTax from thinking you need to file a MA return.
Hal, thanks, you were right! I did check yes relative to making money in another state, great catch.
