Submitting Virginia taxes separate from Federal

I filed my federal taxes jointly with my husband. We was married in October and I moved from Virginia to NC with him at that time. Turbo tax software said I had to file my Virginia state taxes as Married filing separate. At this point we purchased the download version of turbo tax because that is how the online version said we had to do this. We went through and filed our federal jointly and submitted federal and NC together. We then went to do my Virginia separate and all was good until time to file. TT will not let me efile Virginia without also filing federal at the same time but federal has already been submitted. What do I need to do? Do I need to just mail my Virginia taxes? I am so confused and frustrated with this whole process.

Yes, you will need to print/mail your separate VA return.  You cannot e-file a state return without e-filing the corresponding federal return.  When completing the filing interview for the VA return select the print/mail option and all the necessary forms will be printed along with mailing instructions.

I also downloaded Turbo Tax Deluxe.   I efiled my Federal Return but Turbo Tax will not let me mail in my Virginia Return.   IWhen I print it out, it states "Do not Mail a paper copy of your tax return.   Since you filed electronically,....   But I did not e-file my State Return even tho' it is telling me I have done so.      But it did not give me the option to print and mail it in.  I have always done it this way in the past.    What has changed?

When going through the interview questions you may have selected to efile and not realized it.  To determine if your return status.  You can log into TurboTax and go to Tax Home.  If you've submitted your return, you'll see a pending, rejected, or accepted status for the IRS and State.  If you haven't you will see Let's keep working on your return.

In TurboTax you have to indicate to file by mail for our state return.  You can follow these steps to make the file by mail selection:

To print and mail your return in TurboTax for Windows:

  1. With your return open in TurboTax, select the File tab, then select Continue
  2. On the next screen, E-file Your Federal Return for FREE, select File by mail near the bottom
  3. Continue following the screens until you get to Print Tax Return for Mailing. Select Continue
    • On the next screen, select Print Returns to Mail, then select Preview Print Copy in the pop-up window
  4. Once the preview has opened, select the printer icon near the top (or go to Print in the File menu)
  5. When finished, select Continue in TurboTax and follow any additional onscreen instructions

The first page in your printout is your File by Mail Instructions, which gives you the mailing address to send your return to, along with any forms you need to include with your return.
