State ID on W2 just says "Applied For"

I live in Virginia but worked for a week at a company in North Carolina before returning to my old job.

Because Viriginia requires you to pay income tax for work out of state I have state taxes for NC and VA on my W2 for that job. The company has a state ID number for NC, but for VA it just says "Applied For" in the state ID section of Box 15.

I was just wondering if this would affect filing my taxes. I've seen many older posts saying to just but the federal EIN but also a comment or two from last year saying that you need the ID number or else they'll reject your return. I haven't been able to get in touch with HR yet to check if they have a state ID number for VA yet.

Yes, your return will be rejected if the number is left blank, but you can typically use the EIN as a proxy.

If TurboTax Online asks you for a state ID number in a specific format, you can adjust the EIN to fit. ‌For example, if you need exactly 11 digits but the EIN is 9, you can add two zeros to the EIN.‌ This will enable you to move past the issue and file your return. Your social security number and the employer's federal identification number will track your income and withholding.
