Social Security benefits prorated in states earned

I earned social security benefits in 2 states - are taxes paid in each state based on amount of time earned in each state?

What two states?  Some states do not tax Social Security at all so it might not even matter.   However, when you complete your federal return you will indicate which states you lived in during 2020 and what months you lived there.  That will be entered in My Info.

There are 13 states that tax Social Security—Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia.  These states offer varying degrees of income exemptions, but four mirror the federal tax schedule: MN, ND,VT, and WV
