Residency Dates & W-2 Amounts

My husband and I purchased a new home in Indiana in September 2021. We closed on our Illinois home in November 2021 and moved in at that time. Before that we just were doing some renovations but had not moved. However, my husbands employer switched his withholdings early so his W-2 numbers report income for Indiana from September through the end of the year instead of November through the end of the year.

How do I go about adjusting this. Do I need to get his employer to update the W-2 amount for income for each state? We paid in for income taxes for both states. Or do I have to adjust his residency date because of this back to September and leave mine in November?

You do not need a corrected W-2. You can adjust your wages for Illinois and Indiana in the state section for each state.

Sifting your residency back will increase your Illinois tax and decrease your Indiana tax.

You should leave your dates for Indiana from November since that is when you actually moved from Illinois.
