Resided in state for less than full year

How do I specify in Turbo Tax state return (PA) that we resided for only 11 months?

If you moved during the year, enter your residency dates in My Info.

  1. Tap Edit next to your name
  2. On Tell us the state(s) you lived in, enter the state you lived in on December 31
  3. Select I lived in another state in 2021
  4. Enter you previous state of residence

If you are filing together with a spouse, repeat the process in your spouse's info.

Pennsylvania will allow you to adjust your income to report only what was earned in PA.

Ok thanks for the prompt response.  What if I didn't live in the US at the end of the year?

How do i adjust my PA income if I lived in PA for from January to November and for month of December in new state did not have sufficient income that require me to file tax return? Income i am referring to is dividend and interest income i receive for entire year.

If you became a permanent resident of your new state in December, then you can fill out a part-year tax return for PA. TurboTax will then allow you to allocate all your sources of income between PA-sourced and non-PA sourced when you are preparing your PA state return. To do that:

  1. Select the My Info tab on the left menu underneath 2021 Taxes
  2. Click Edit next to your name
  3. Enter your new state as the resident state if you officially moved there in December 2021
  4. Select Yes to I lived in another state in 2021 and select Pennsylvania in the dropdown menu

If you do not need to file a state tax return for your new state because you are beneath the filing threshold for that state, then you can delete the state on the Status of your state returns screen by selecting the trashcan next to that state.

If your move to the new state was never intended to be permanent and you maintained your Pennsylvania home, then you should just file a full-year Pennsylvania return. They would then have the right to tax all your income.

To remove a state return in the desktop version of TurboTax, make sure you are in the federal section of the programs, then use the File option where you will see Remove State Return.

My state return for PA shows the same amount owed if I specify the date I moved to Hawaii as 12/9/2021 (which is the actual date).  Or if I specify 8/9/2021.  Or if I say I lived in PA the entire year.  Seems like that amount owed should vary in each of those cases.

It would depend.  If you are just changing the date you moved and nothing else, it wouldn't necessarily change the amount you owed as you would have to change your earnings you received while not living in PA.  If for instance, you lived in Hawaii, but still performed physical work in PA (you travelled back and forth to work...not likely but it is for other states and is still possible) you would still owe the same amount of tax to PA as the tax rate is 3.07% for both residents and non residents.

In order to see a difference in what you owe to PA, you would have to change your wages earned in PA, not just the dates you resided in PA.

i am asking about dividends and interest not wages. Why do i have to pay to PA  for dividends i earned when i did not reside in PA for entire year?

doing this "

  1. Select the My Info tab on the left menu underneath 2021 Taxes
  2. Click Edit next to your name
  3. Enter your new state as the resident state if you officially moved there in December 2021
  4. Select Yes to I lived in another state in 2021 and select Pennsylvania in the dropdown menu" does not allow to allocate dividend and interest income for 11 months i actually lived in PA.

Correct, you will need to Allocate your Interest and Dividend Income yourself in each of your Part-Year Resident state returns.

In the state interview, TurboTax will display the Federal amount of these income items, and you will enter the amount that Belongs (or Does Not Belong) to that state, depending on the state.

For instance, since you received most of your Interest/Dividends while living in Pennsylvania, most of that income belongs to PA.

If you don't meet the income requirements for reporting in your new state, you are also correct that you don't need to file a return there.
