Question about IT-112-R (OH) - Resident of NY State and worked in Mason, OH

I am receiving a refund from taxes paid to OH State but not from Local taxes (city of Mason). I am trying to fill out this form, under "taxes paid to another state" but I am not sure where to get the "Tax Computed on Your Ohio Return". I know TurboTax does not calculate it and the explanation they have there does not really help. Is this the total taxes I paid in OH? Meaning box 17 plus box 19 from my W-2?

You say you are  "receiving a refund" from taxes paid to OH State.  Did you mean to say you are "receiving a credit" from NYS?

If so, yes, the NY credit includes both the state and local tax paid to another jurisdiction.  So, if you're not asked to enter the local taxed paid, separately, add boxes 17 & 19 together for this entry.

Resident Credit

Who is eligible?

You are entitled to claim this nonrefundable credit for the tax year if:

  • you were a full-year or part-year resident of New York State, or a New York State-resident estate or trust, or a part-year resident trust; and
  • you had income sourced to and taxed by another state, a local government within another state, the District of Columbia, or a Canadian province (this income generally includes wages and business income, and typically excludes interest, dividends, gambling winnings, and lottery winnings).

Thank you! I meant that Ohio State is giving me back what they withheld in taxes. So if state taxes were $500, they are giving me back all $500.

But not the local taxes (box 19).

So my specific question was what to put under "Tax Computed on Your Ohio Return".

Q. So my specific question was what to put under "Tax Computed on Your Ohio Return".

A. Only the box 17 amount, $500 in your example.

Ohio city income tax is not administered by the State Dept of Taxation (ODT).

If you did not physically work in Mason, you can get a separate refund from the city, not ODT.  Contact the city for the proper form.
