Printed three returns for filing state in Alabama. One contained Federal 1040, the other two did not. Is 1040 required?

There are certain cases where the Federal Form 1040 should be filed with an Alabama tax return.  To err on the side of caution, include it.  If it is not needed, then it can be discarded when your state return is processed.
