Pd taxes to NYC due to error in Zip code but never actually earned funds in NYC

I work for Amazon and they use ADP for payroll. After the 3rd paycheck, I was finally able to review a paystub and noticed I was paying taxes to New Your City but I was living and working in Tucson Arizona. I have not lived nor worked in New York City my entire life. The zip code that ADP had for me was 10004 which is NYC but my actual zip code is 85730. Since the taxes should never have been deducted in the first place, how do I file my taxes to get the full refund? Should I indicate that I earned $0 in NYC to get the full refund? This is a mess and I do not know how to file this correctly. I need your advice as I do my own taxes using Turbo Tax.

Yes. In your situation, you will have to file a nonresident New York return to get a refund of income taxes paid.

Please follow the steps below in TurboTax:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on State on the left hand side.
  3. Add the state of New York as a nonresident.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

My Version of Turbo Tax does not have a State button on the left hand side, as a matter of fact I dont see a State button anyplace on my version. It automatically adds Arizona since that is my state of residence but I do not see anyplace to add a second state and it is not NY State. It is New York City taxes. Are they the same?

Yes. NYC taxes are calculated within the nonresident NYS return, IT-203.

If you are using the desktop version of TurboTax, you would Click on Get Another State under the State Taxes tab.  I have attached a picture for additional guidance.
