Hi everyone,
I'd like to see if anyone has had a similar experience or has any advice about what to do next.
I e-filed my 2020 federal and state tax returns (Mississippi) on March 27, 2021, using the TurboTax Home and Business 2020 software for Mac. The same day, I received emails from TurboTax that both the federal and state returns had been accepted, and the "Check e-file status" option in the software still shows the same. Both the federal and state return evidence refunds owed to me. I received the federal refund from the IRS several weeks ago, but I still have not gotten anything from Mississippi. I called the MS Department of Revenue's automated hotline today, and it says they never received the return. Their online refund tracking also shows no return information received. What the hell, TurboTax?? I've e-filed my returns through TurboTax every year for the past 12 years and never had an issue, but this is extremely disconcerting. It's a **bleep** good thing the deadline was extended! Am I now stuck having to file a paper return and wait up to ANOTHER 16 WEEKS to get my refund (per the state)?? Or is there a way to e-file it again? I don't want to risk screwing up my federal return.
The issue is with the state, not with Turbotax. Many states are slow to update their records, and some do not do so until they actually process your filing. After all, it was Mississippi that told TT your return was Accepted for processing. Please see the below statement from the Mississippi Department of Revenue:
Due to the increase in fraudulent activity, the Mississippi Department of Revenue has implemented additional procedures and safeguards into our return processes in an effort to mitigate potential fraud. These processes will validate income tax returns and credits reported prior to issuing requested refunds. As a result, these additional procedures may cause a delay in refund processing in order to ensure that the right refunds are being paid to the right taxpayers.
