PA or DC State of Domicile

If you move from Pennsylvania to Washington DC (staying with someone) to be closer to work (Virginia) but you don't plan to live there longer than 2 yrs, which state would be considered your state of domicile?

Which tax form do you file with your employer? Documentation like Driver license, vehicle registration, voting registration is all in Pennsylvania.

Residency vs Domicile?

Thank you!

It sounds like you do not maintain a home in Pennsylvania, so I would be inclined to say that you would need to fie as a resident of DC.

Just because you don't change documents, like your Driver's Licence, does not mean you still live there.

Usually a temporary absence from a residence state is less than 1 year, and that would be while maintaining the original home.

I agree, you are a DC resident, for tax purposes.
