NYS eFile glitch with estimated tax payments

Hello, I'm having trouble completing NYS eFile with Home & Business Desktop. Here are the details:

  • 2024 overpayment fully applied to 2025 estimated tax payments.
  • I set up state estimated tax payments but did not schedule. I only wanted the vouchers printed. All looked good in forms view. The first two quarterly payments are $0 due to the applied overpayment.
  • During eFile I selected "Pay on NYS...website later." That was accepted, with the usual message that payment dates & amounts, etc. would be included for print out. That's what I wanted.
  • Next step was blocked by the warning box below. "Go to State Taxes - Estimated Tax Payments. Your payment amount is $0." There is no going forward with the eFile from this point. I tried going back and carefully retracing the steps but the only thing that seems to work is to apply the overpayment to estimated taxes but decline setting up estimated tax payments. But that omits including the payment vouchers.

I just checked my 2023 return using and this worked just fine. Am I missing something here?

Thanks -

Things change. The state does not care about the payment vouchers. They just want your money when it is due. You can pay online with  ePay quickly and safely.

You can also print and mail the vouchers -when needed, the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Thanks, Amy. I'm good with the payment options, and I just use the vouchers for my own records. I'm just asking why TT now blocks completing eFile as I described, preventing the tax payment calculations and print-out. I'm wondering if there's a workaround or something I missed, a bug to report, or is this what you mean by "Things change?"

The program changes a little each year. I have found in my time here that things are usually changed because the programmer was given another limiter. I don't know what changed or why. Just that they do and there is always a really good reason, when I get to find out.

Since you said desktop, I knew you were in good shape. It also means that you are more aware of the program and how things work together.

The programmers don't share the millions of needed changes or the reasons with us. Some of the big ones get shared and they are always interesting.

If the software actually changed in this way, I'd call it out as a bug. But maybe I missed a step somewhere since a search doesn't turn up other questions about this. Alright, then, I'll guess we'll leave it there...

Thanks,

- Tom

Just to close the loop on this, I figured out a workaround that might help someone else.

The specific glitch is in e-filing a state return (NYS in my case) with a 2024 over-payment applied to 2025 estimated taxes such that the first payment is $0. Even though I selected the option to pay later on the state website, TT Home & Biz would not e-file with estimated tax payments set up unless I scheduled at least one actual payment date for a non-zero amount. .

E-file went through when I "scheduled" a $1 payment for 4/15/25 as shown below.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

Can you clarify if you have tried scheduling a payment through the website as suggested by rtsllc2020?  Looking over the diagnostic file, if I clear the scheduled payment, I can bypass the loop by skipping the review and clicking file.  I did have to go in and do an update for this to work.  If neither of these options works for you and you cannot e-file, please respond for further assistance.

@BrittanyS, just making sure you know that I (rtsllc2020) sent the diagnostic file in the previous post. Perhaps cf552 sent one as well. I've already filed and had tried what you suggest here. It may be that the required update you mention was not issued before my return was filed some weeks ago.

Yes, I believe the update wasn't available when you had the issue.  I was looking through the post and noticed you stated you did e-file after finding the workaround, so I tagged cf552.  I want to see if they are still having the issue after the update.

Thank you! I was able to delete the quarterly payments for the NY taxes and submit my taxes.
