I worked 2 different jobs in 2 different states in 2021. I'm completing the state taxes, and it's asking me to "enter the non Massachusetts portion of the amount you paid during 2021 to Social Security (FICA), railroad, Medicare, U.S., or Massachusetts retirement." Do I get this information from the W-2 for the job that I worked in the other state? If so, what boxes on the W-2 do I use? Thanks in advance.....
Yes, you would get that information from the W-2 that is not Massachusetts income. Add the amounts reported in boxes 4 and 6.
What if you never updated your workplace's payroll with your change of address? I'm in the same situation - lived the first half of the year in NY then MA from 7/1/2021 onward.
Since July 1st is the halfway mark of the year you would add boxes 4 and 6 and report 1/2 as the non-Ma portion. The change of address will not affect this entry.
Not getting the residence changed will affect the tax withholding in the state section (Boxes 15-17) on your W2. However, when filing the part-year returns for each state you can allocate the correct amount of wages to each state based on when you actually moved.
So you may get a little refund from NY, but owe MA since the withholding will be off.
