NJ resident for the first half of 2016, FL resident for the second half of 2016

Hi,

So here's my situation. In early 2016 until around May, I was a resident of NJ and worked as a remote contractor for a company based in Boston early in 2016. In October 2016, I moved to Orlando, Florida and I have been working here ever since. I also received my W-2 Form for Florida. My question is, which forms do I need to complete if I worked as a remote contractor in early 2016 as NJ resident, and then I moved to Florida later in 2016?

I can't answer your question entirely. But I can tell you that FL does NOT tax personal income. You will NOT file a FL tax return of any type. Besides, there are no forms in existence for reporting any personal income to the state of FL. (There are forms for other types of income - but you have no need to use, or even concern yourself with it.)

Carl, thanks for the reply. I have slightly modified my question. Upon googling, I think living somewhere for over a few months with a way to prove my residency (I'm listed as a tenant for my apt in Florida) makes me a resident of FL now. If I'm understanding correctly, I will only have to file my tax return for NJ for my income as a contractor early 2016?

That's what I would "think". But as a FL resident myself I don't deal with the state tax issues that much, and am therefore not at all that knowledgeable on how your NJ residency will affect your FL income.
