I moved from Texas to NC on May 22, 2024. On the Part-Year Resident Income Allocations page, the federal income showes $31,810 of taxable SS benefits. Interpolating for the NC portion of the year yields $31,810 x .61 = $19,404. I enter this in the column for "North Carolina Resident income" for the row "Taxable SS Benefits".
When I do this my "NC Tax Due" increases from $1200 to $1900 dollars. So it appears to be taxing the SS benefits. But NC doesn't tax SS benefits so the "NC Tax Due" should not increase.
When I go to the next screen "Part-Year Resident Income Allocations", it again shows me that the Federal Adustments were $31,810. I enter $19,404 again in "North Carolina Resident Adjustments, but the "NC Tax Due" does not change. I thought this might be where turbotax removes the SS benfits from being taxed in NC.
How do I enter the SS benefit info for these screens so that the "NC Tax Due" reflects no SS benefits and goes back to $1200?
Did you start your return by saying that your residence was in NC, and that you had lived in another state (Texas) and told TurboTax when you moved?
Then, did you enter your Social Security distributions on your SSA-1099?
When I did this on my test return, then 85% of my SS was taxable (correct), and this amount was subtracted from NC income as deduction from income.
You should not have to make any adjustments at all - the amount of taxable Social Security on line 6b on the 1040 ought to be subtracted automatically from your NC income.
So I would go back to NOT entering any adjustments to NC, because this ought to be automatic.
