To be clear, the LLC is registered in NJ. I’m filing in my state return for NY because it’s where I now live and have all my W-2 income. I lived in NJ in 2021.
Hi, folks. I know this is a rather specific circumstance. I’ve searched TurboTax and Googled for an answer but can’t find one. The only declared item I have for my LLC on my federal is a carryover loss from the prior year.
BTW, at the end of my federal and state review, my TurboTax Home and Business writes, "Based on the information you have entered, we do not think you need to file taxes,” (in NJ, the other state I just happen to have installed on TurboTax). "If you believe you need to prepare taxes for (NJ) click to add the state (NJ) to your return.” Well, that’s my question. I wonder what you think. Thank you.
Gregory
You don't need to file a personal tax return for New Jersey since you don't have any income from there. It appears you don't need to file a partnership return either based on the following from the New Jersey Department of Revenue:
So it appears that since you don't have income from New Jersey or a resident partner, you aren't require to file. Here is a link to the article: New Jersey LLC return filing requirments
