My daughter did a summer internship in California, but is a resident of Texas. Does she need to file a CA state income tax return?

Student is a resident in Texas and interned in California over summer. Does she need to file a California income tax return? Or is the federal return sufficient?

Yes, if she earned more than $1,050 (the standard deduction) in CA and is a dependent of another person (you).  She would have to file a CA Nonresident return (form 540NR).

If she earned $1050 or less she does not have to file a CA return.

Hello, in this case, can the student qualify for any tax deductions

Your daughter will need to file CA if her income is more than the standard deduction for her. She will be able to reduce her income by the standard deduction. See CA instructions to see if she may qualify for any additional breaks.

A student may have additional income from scholarships or deductions from expenses. Education credits belong on your return, if you are claiming her as a dependent. See Pub 970 for education questions.
