My 2018 IL State return rejected because of my AGI from 2017 is wrong

I’m trying to file for 2018 but my IL state return keeps getting rejected. When I try to fix it, it asks me to choose an option if I have filed for IL for years 2016 and/or 2017 or to chose neither. I keep choosing the one that says I filed for 2016 and/or 2017. I have filed for 2016 but not 2017 due to not being in IL the entire year of 2017. It keeps asking for my 2017 AGI and I put zero and it keeps getting rejected. But is this because I keep choosing the wrong option? Should I just choose the one where I didn’t file for any of those years?????

You can't e-file if you choose you did not file a return within 2 years.  If you filed within the last two years,  you should have received from IL  a Personal Identification Number(IL-PIN) on your IL-1040 booklet or on a postcard.  You need that number to e-file, if you keep getting rejected, you should just mail in your return.

The following information is from IL

To e-file an Illinois tax return, you (and/or spouse) must have:

  • Filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years, or
  • A valid Illinois Driver's License or State ID

Note. If you (and/or spouse) have not file an Illinois tax return within the past two years and you (and/or spouse) do not have a valid Illinois driver's license or Illinois State ID, you must paper file your Illinois return. However, you (and/or spouse) should be assigned an IL-PIN to e-file next year. See the Illinois e-file eligibility page for more information on these requirements.

Note. If your return is rejected with Reject Code IL1040-8000-2, IL1040-8000-2, IL1040-10500-3 or IL1040-9900-2, the signature alternative for the taxpayer (and/or spouse) does not match the IDOR Records.

Your (and/or spouse’s) signature alternative options depends on whether or not you have filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years.

If you did file a return within the last two years:

If you have filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years, the IDOR should have provided you with an Illinois Personal Identification Number(IL-PIN) on your IL-1040 booklet or on a postcard. To obtain your IL-PIN, visit the IL-PIN Inquiry website or call 1-800-732-8866.

For your signature alternative, you have 3 options (shown below). The option that you select for your signature alternative must the IDOR’s records are your return will get rejected.

  • Prior Year AGI (IL-1040 Line 1)
  • Illinois Driver’s License or State ID Number
  • Illinois Personal Identification Number (IL-PIN)

If you did not file a return within the last two years:

If you have not filed an Illinois tax return within the past two years, the IDOR has not issued you an Illinois Personal Identification Number (IL-PIN) and you will need a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID to e-file. For your signature alternative, each of the following must be entered exactly as shown on your Illinois driver’s license or state ID:

  • License or ID Number
  • First Name
  • Middle Name (if present on Illinois driver’s license)
  • Last Name
  • Suffix (if present on Illinois driver’s license)
  • Weight
