I moved from NJ to PA mid-year but continued to earn income from NJ for 2 months after moving. While my employer was informed of my move, they continued to only take out NJ taxes - No PA taxes ever taken out. For illustration, say I earned 100,000 total, 85,000 while in NJ and 15,000 once I moved to PA. Say total NJ Tax withheld is 6,000 (again, no PA taxes withheld). I'm doing my state taxes (part time resident for both NJ and PA). When doing PA return, do I need to make a "PA adjustment" for my compensation (is any portion taxable as PA income) ? If so, how do I document this adjustment? Also, do I need to also adjust anything for NJ return?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
If you worked in New Jersey, you will report the income for the time you were a resident and the income after you moved to Pennsylvania will be NJ nonresident income. You will then report the compensation to Pennsylvania and claim the credit for the taxes paid to another jurisdiction on the Pennsylvania return.
