MN W4 with new baby

Hello,

I recently delivered my son on 12/28 and I recently changed my MN W4 to add him, but the MN has one question I don't know how to answer or what should be right answer to avoid owing taxes. Section 1 asks if no one else can claim as depended which i always says no that means saying "1" plus mu new child which makes it two allowances. If my MN W4 has two allowances I shouldn't be concerned of owing? Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I am a new mom and I really don't know the best way to fill my out my W4 with my new baby.

Q. If my MN W4 has two allowances I shouldn't be concerned of owing?

A. That's correct. You should get a refund (unless there is zero state withholding).

Actually, you should be claiming three allowances, if that is your only job.  One allowance each on lines A,B and D and maybe a fourth on line E.

You did not ask this question---but just to make sure you know----when you enter your baby's information in MY INFO, it will ask how many months the child lived with you in 2024.  For a newborn, you need to say the WHOLE YEAR at the top of that drop down menu.  You are allowed to say that for a new baby so that you get the child-related credits for the year.

Hello! I didn't claim more because my husband works. We made the mistake of putting that allowance last year and we owed a ton of taxes so I don't want to make that mistake again.
