Michigan Schedule 1 Line 23, box H checked incorrectly

This is for the 2022 tax year. I am the filer but my spouse, who is older, was born prior to 1946 and therefore qualifies for Tier 1 status. Her pension income is public and she retired prior to 2013. I retired last year and my retirement income is from a private IRA. Neither of us has any SSA exempt employment history. TurboTax has our ages listed correctly as well as dates of birth. Nevertheless, it has checked box 23H -- "Check if spouse retired as of 01-01-2013 and born after 1952"

This is not true for either one of us. I did not retire prior to 2013 and my wife was not born after 1952. So why is this box checked?

TurboTax appears to be using the correct numbers in section A of Form 4884 and correctly calculating our deduction. But I'm concerned that the incorrect Schedule 1 will cause an issue processing our return. Anyone know how to fix this?

(I've seen a similar but not exactly the same question come up about Schedule 1 in 2021 but there's no information about how this was actually solved).

I have tried different age scenarios and am not able to duplicate your issue. Review your state entries and if you can't find the issue try the following.

 If you are using the:

  • desktop - check your software is up to date
  • online software, you may want to delete your state.

Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:

  • Don't use Internet Explorer.
  • Clear cache and cookies,
  • Sign in using a different browser.
  • Sign in using a different device
  • Log back into your return.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for looking into this. I tried your suggestions (i'm using desktop turbotax premier on a MacBook) but they did not solve the issue. I have a longer write-up that would more appropriate to send privately . There's nothing confidential in the document, but the details won't be of interest to anyone else in the forum. Is there a way for me to send you a pdf?

In the meantime I'm planning to simply override the checkmark in box 23H and file that way.

You can override the box but that will void the accuracy guarantee. Sometimes we see where one person has an issue that others don't. If you would like to have it investigated, you can contact us here.

Unfortunately, we are unable to receive email. This is why contacting support, that can see your screen, would be better for you.

Your solution works and should not cause any efile issues.
