I understand the money is reported as wages and nothing to report in terms of 1099-B, etc. However, I'm sure NY wants to tax some of this money earned there, hence the NY return needed to be filed. Can really only allocate the wages by "percentage" as "days" do not apply. This is what I've done thus far. Now I'm being asked to potentially explain the allocation reason based on "volume of business transacted". I believe I may be in the wrong area of TurboTax to report this.
I just want to satisfy NY and show taxes were taken out for these wages. Thank you!
No, you appear to be in the correct section. If you did not base your NY allocated income on volume of business transacted, then select "no" and continue through TurboTax. As you continue through TurboTax, you will likely see another page asking about your non-resident deductions and you will have to again make an allocation based on amount. There will also be questions about the number of days spent in NY city. NY city has its own tax. Lastly, you will likely see a question about whether you had worked in Yonkers, NY. Answer the questions accordingly, and then you will be done with the NY section.
Thanks for the quick reply, George! I'm allocating wages by percentage as that is the only way I am seeing possible. Correct? I'm calculating the percentage of W2 Box1 wages to match the State Box 16 wages. It's approximately 26%. Is this considered "allocating income to NY based on volume of business"? I thought not given the "salesperson working on commission" example. If selecting "no" as you mentioned, brings me to the next question of "filling out Nonresident Business Schedule to allocate NY business income". I believe you are saying to fill out this IT-203-A form "to again make an allocation based on amount". Is this true? I'm successful in filling out the days in NY, city tax and not working in Yonkers. Appreciate the help!
Yes. You will allocate the amount of income you believe was earned in New York (NY). The NY step-by-step section will allow you to allocate the amount of income that should be taxed to NY (Form IT-203-A if you are self employed). If it's strictly W-2 wages, then this schedule is not needed. For wages the income will be allocated on Form IT-203 from the TurboTax interview.
Since Florida (FL) does not have a state income tax, they will not provide a credit for taxes paid to another state.
