Just got a job from an employer in Ohio and I will be working remotely from Utah. Am I Exempt from Ohio or school district income tax?

Q. Am I Exempt from Ohio and school district income tax?

A. Yes.

Since you do not physically work in Ohio, you are not subject to State tax.

Only residents of School Districts are subject to School Distruct Income tax.

Ohio also has city income tax which is imposed on city residents and non residents who   physically work within the city limits.  You are not subjet to that either.

Your employer should not withhold any of those 3 income taxes. But, sometimes employers mistakenly withhold city and/or state tax on  remote employees and you may have to deal with that mistake (reply back for instructuons, if needed).

Thank you for the response @Anonymous_ !! Will I need to file as a Ohio non-resident? I am going through onboarding paycor software and it wants to fill Ohio Nonresident IT-4 Employee's Withholding Exemption Certificate and I don't see that as an option of saying I am telecommuting/remote on that form.

Q. Will I need to file as a Ohio non-resident?

A.  Maybe.  Technically your situation is not covered by form IT-4 and some employers will withhold OH state tax.  This causes you to have to file a non resident return for a refund. If no OH tax is withheld and you do not physically work in OH, you do not need to file an OH return.

I would check the box "I am exempt from Ohio withholding under R.C. 5747.06(A)(1) through (6)", if your employer is insisting you file it.  Or add wording "Non resident working only out of state".  I'm of the opinion that your employer is not required to get an IT-4 from you since you don't physically work in OH.  If your situation is that you will occaisionally work in OH, then your emplyer would be correct to withhold some OH tax.
