It wont let me efile my state taxes

Hello, my federal taxes are filed and accepted. However i can not file the state ones, it just gives me the option to print and then the instructions are to e-file. How can i e-file? using which software? can i just mail the money i owe?

mailing state is free while TT charges to efile state. (except New York)

if TT won't allow you to submit state return there is either a critical problem with the data you entered or a form you need hasn't been approved by the state.    you can mail payment with the return, however, I'll bet you can pay electronically through your state's website.   the state may even allow you to specify a future date when payment will be processed  - even as late as 4/15 or the initial due date of the return.    there will be no charge if the payment comes out of your checking or savings a/c.  there will probably be a fee if the state allows payment using a debit or credit card.

It says there s an entry i need to fix

"change of city resident status - the amount entered in column a of line 19 new york adjustment worksheet do not agree with the total transferred from the income allocation worksheet to line 19 column a. Above lines should total 0 "

i try to change the amount to 0 but nothing happens.

Seems to be a common issue. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with support yesterday and the final solution I got was “mail it in.” Swell.

@storm8858 When you try to e-file, does it give you an error?

@CarissaM  - I have the same issue with my Michigan return.  I get the error "To e-file, you must also select the federal return".   My federal return was accepted two weeks ago.  My state taxes weren't accepted because of an error from TT.  I updated TT as instructed in the e-mail I received, ran the review, no errors found, but it won't let me file my state taxes because of the above error.  How do I e-file my state taxes?

@storm8858 Some TurboTax Desktop customers are unable to submit their state return after previously filing their Federal return.

To ensure that there are not any errors preventing you from e-filing, please choose the Review tab and run a final review on your return.

If you're experiencing the issue above after checking for any errors,  please go here to receive email notifications when any updates related to this issue become available.

If you are are using the Online version, I would suggest deleting your State return and then re-entering.  Please see the instructions in the link below:

I am using the purchased CD version not the on-line version.  I ran review to the upteenth time and still am not able to efile my NY state return continue to get the need to select federal return.  This appears to be a critical flaw in the software and is preventing me from completing my taxes.

thanks, so we just wait for updates.  my VT return was rejected for TT error when i first filed and said i needed to wait for the update.  TT said the update would be that day March 4th- so it's taking longer; good to know

I'm fine waiting- federal is done, that's the big one

yes I saw this and have been getting the emails have followed all things they have told me and I am still unable to e-file my NY return say need to select a federal file which has already been accepted.  Won't go any place has been reviewed multiple times no errors just won't let me file.  Software program is flawed somewhere

I'm having exactly the same problem as "Storm...". Federal return was e-filed and accepted yesterday. It is listed by TTax as "accepted". CA return has been checked repeatedly with no errors. But TTax refuses to e-file CA return today, sending me back one screen to click "federal" as well as "state" for e-filing. This is impossible because "federal" can't be clicked,  as it already has been e-filed/accepted. Clearly this is a bug -- probably an elementary one. Please prioritize fixing it!

I have no errors. When I get to the point where TT wants me to make the $25 e-file payment for the state return it does not respond. I called support and was on the phone for more than n hour. I cleared the cache, tried a different browser=, shut down the program and computer, made sure I had the latest updates, change the screen size. No luck. They said they had a number of similar complaints and still have no idea what the problem is. There was no follow-up on there part. Extremely bad service from the tech side of TT. All I got Was "sorry, you will have to file by mail." When I asked if they would refund my TT purchase because I wanted a program that would e-file both federal and state they said no.

I will recommend that people look elsewhere next year.

Same. I reported the correct AGI but it was rejected, so then I put in 0 for the AGI and tried just Federal - accepted.

Now, starting right after that and continuing over 15 days later, it still shows the federal is not e-filed (shows rejected: return reviewed). I can try to file only state but it says "This return cannot be e-filed before your federal return has been e-filed"

BUT if I try to file federal + state it does the transmission process, and then gives an error that says:

"Transmission failed: The submission is a duplicate of one that was previously received.. Please contact customer support"
