Is it normal for federal to be more money than state taxes? Asking due to first time.

Yes, it is normal for your federal refund to be more than your state refund (often by a lot).  There are generally more federal credits available and you pay more federal income tax during the year (withholding).

But, it's not entirely always the case - you can sometimes see a larger state refund.
