Importing Federal Tax return without states for Desktop?

Hi,

I moved from VA to MD in 2022 and got married. As a result I was told to file my VA state taxes I need to create a federal return as if I was married filing seperately and as instructed I also bought the desktop version of TurboTax.

However since it only comes with 1 state free when I try to import my federal taxes it errors out because it's also trying to import my Maryland Return and I am not going to pay $45 dollars for that.  So is TT expecting me to fully re-enter all my information or is there a way to just import my federal taxes with all my w2 information.

Ok what did you do?  Did you start in the Online version?  Did you do Federal as Joint online?  You don't need to import that return to do the MFS return.  You need to start a brand new federal return and do a mock federal MFS return to flow into the state.   Go up to File-New.

Yes I filed MFJ for Federal and Maryland online. I got an extension for VA.

I was hoping I could just import my 2022 Federal return since it would have all my personal infor, W2, rental income etc so all I would really need to do is change my filing status to MFS and hopefully some minor adjustments, but it seems like I need to start over.

You still might be stuck if you already downloaded the other state as the free state.  You might need to call in and get the second state put in your account so you can download it.

I did download Virginia as my free state since that is the one I needed to complete.  So I think I am ok

Now my plan is to just fill out my federal taxes as MFS and then fill out my VA state return. I was just hoping TT had a better solution since it seems like an easy fix to just add an option to exclude state returns during import.
