If my residency status is in ohio but i have gambling winnings in west virginia why do i have to file a west virginia return?

I have never had to do this before

No, you do not. 

Casino gaming winnings from West Virginia are not taxable.  Unless winnings were from the West Virginia State Lottery, they are not taxable.  Do not file a West Virginia return if this was your only income.

West Virginia source income of a nonresident does not include the following income even if it was included in your federal adjusted gross income:

  • Gambling winnings, other than prizes awarded by the West Virginia State Lottery

In the personal info section, when it asks if you made money in another state, answer NO, since you know the casino winnings are not taxable, by WV. This will prevent TurboTax from thinking you need to file a WV return.

The gambling winnings are taxable on your OH return and federal return
