If moved from iowa to kansas 09/16, why would I be listed as having lived in Kansas the full year?

I'm confused as to why when I start to fill out my Kansas return that I am listed as having lived here the full year when I moved in September?? And does it make a difference? I am retired but received SS and retirement income.

The place to enter your state or states of residence is in the Personal Info section. It is the first section you complete before even entering any amounts. Look at the top of the interview screen for the titles, Personal Info, Federal, State, Health Insurance, Other Tax Situations and more. Select the Personal Info tab and then click on Continue. You will see your name and personal info appear. Click on edit to make changes.

There is a question on this page which asks for your State of Residence. You have probably selected Kansas there. The state you select should be the state you resided in on December 31, 2016.

There is another question which asks if you lived in any other state in 2016. You need to click yes and enter the other state you lived in for the current tax year. It will also ask you the date you became a resident of your new state. The date you enter will trigger different questions for you to answer in the state interview section.

Being a resident of two states during 2016 will require you to file two state tax returns, unless you only had income from one state.
