If I work for a international company headquartered in PA and I reside in NC, why should I have to file in two states?

Did your employer withhold taxes for the both states ?

If this is the case and you are the resident of only one state you can file a return for two states one as resident and one as non-resident.

If your employer only withheld taxes from one state and that is your state of residency. You only need to file state return for that state.
