If I itemize deductions on my 2018 fed tax return do I have to itemize on my NY State return too, or can I just take the standard deduction on the NY return?

New York allows you to do whatever is best for you on the NY return.  In the past, the NY standard deduction was higher than the federal, so some taxpayers itemized federal but used the standard on the state.
