I'm completing my Virigina State tax forms - where do I put down that I want my 2017 refund credited to my VA 2018 taxes?

The section to indicate you want to apply your Virginia overpayment to next year is the "Estimated Payments section".

Follow these steps in order to apply your 2017 Virginia overpayment to your 2018 Taxes:

  • When you are going through the final review of your Virginia State Return, you’ll reach a screen titled A few things before we wrap you your state taxes”.
  • Scroll down to "Other tax forms" and click start/revisit across from "Make Estimated Payments for Next Year".
  • Select Yes that you want to start the state estimated taxes section now.
  • Make entries on the next few screens as appropriate.  You will need to generate estimates at least as much as the refund you want to apply to 2018.
  • Going through the process to generate estimated payment vouchers enables you to apply your refund to the estimates.
