I lived in MO all of 2024. I worked in Kansas for 25 days last year and MO the rest of the time. My employer forgot to withhold any KS tax on my W2. I asked for a W2C.

The W2C only contained a Box 15,16, and 17. It listed Kansas, income, and tax paid. My employer said they "corrected" my pay from 2024 and redirected tax money from MO to KS to make the taxes accurate. I have asked for a new W2 showing the correct MO income and tax paid and the correct KS income and tax paid. Currently they are refusing to saying that I have all I need. This has been a back and forth for weeks. What do I actually need to report? Do I report ALL of my income to MO? Do I report my TOTAL minus KS as MO income? I am wondering what I need to tell them a new W2 needs to show. I am very confused. Thank you.

You'll file a non-resident Kansas state return first and allocate the income you earned for those 25 days you worked in Kansas

Next, you'll file a resident Missouri state return and allocate all your income.

The Missouri return will give you credit for the Kansas tax you paid on that 25 days of income so that you are not double-taxed.

If your employer withheld only Kansas state tax, you should get a refund for the majority of that Kansas state tax and you'll owe Missouri tax that wasn't properly withheld and paid.

State taxes are withheld and paid quarterly, so I assume your employer corrected your future withholding, but they can't get the money BACK from Kansas and send it to Missouri, you need to reconcile that on your state returns.
