I live in MD, work in DC, but had taxes withheld in DC. What can I do

I live in MD, and my employer is in DC. All state-withheld taxes were withheld by DC. What do I have to do in order to make sure that I pay MD taxes only, not DC taxes.

You need to file a DC return to get a refund of the taxes paid in. You can use the refund to then pay your Maryland tax due.

Going forward, you should tell your employer to stop withholding DC taxes, and have them pay them to Maryland if they can. Otherwise, you should start paying in estimated taxes to Maryland, to avoid penalties for late payment of tax.
