I just realized that the state of Maryland isn't taking out any taxes out of my check. How do I fill out the form properly so they can start taking out taxes?

I filled out the MW 507, but taxes are not being taken out of my check. I want to learn how do I fill the form out correctly because I don't want to owe the state of Maryland any money when I file

If you didn't have any Maryland taxes taken out last year, I recommend that you fill out a new MW507 with -0- Exemptions.  By claiming -0-, your Employer will take out the maximum for your pay range.

Once the change is made, if you find that your Employer is taking out more than you want, you can always complete a new MW507 and claim 1 or 2 exemptions to reduce the withholding.

I put 0 for exemptions and my state, MD, is still not taking enough. I’ve owed 2 years in a row now and the number is nothing to sneeze at. What more can I do to break the cycle?

Recommend these changes to the Maryland MW507:

  • Claim Single or Married, but withhold at Single rate,
  • Total number of exemptions of 0,
  • Add an Additional withholding per pay period on line 2.

Then make sure you check your payroll stub to see whether more Maryland withholding was computed.
