I got a 1099 R from CALPERS after my dad died. Box 7 is checked with 7. I am not a resident of CA but turbotax is stating I need to file a state return. Is this accurate?

I am a resident in Nebraska, My father was a former public employee in CA, receiving retirement pay through CALPERS, he passed away in CA in late 2022. In 2023 I received beneficiary paperwork from CALPERS, later in the year I received a one time payment of $724 from CALPERS with $3 taken out in the State Tax withheld box for CA state tax. I received a 1099 R in my name with a 7 in box 7. When I enter the 1099 R into turbotax it says that I need to file a State return with CA as a non-resident. I just want to make sure this is accurate, even though I am not a resident of CA?

If the 1099-R you received shows a distribution, plus California tax withheld, you will need to file a CA Non-Resident State Return.

Here's detailed info on How to File a Non-Resident State Return.

As a nonresident, you pay tax on your taxable income from California sources.

Sourced income includes, but is not limited to:

  • Services performed in California
  • Rent from real property located in California
  • The sale or transfer of real California property
  • Income from a California business, trade or profession

Here's more info on How CA taxes Non-Resident Income.
