I filed for unemployment in the state of MD, but I live in WV. Is it normal to owe over 1000 in state taxes in the state I reside in?

I made 17,216 in WV working multiple jobs, and WV National Guard pay
I also made 27,050.00 unemployment state of MD

A. Yes, if you have $27,050 of income with no state withholding.

The MD unemployment compensation is subject to WV income tax. It does not need to be filed in MD. You do not  need to file a MD tax return.  If  there was MD withholding by mistake, you will need to file an MD return to get a refund.

I for some reason owe 1088 in WV, but I’m receiving 1800 from MD tax I’m so confused.

I said: The MD unemployment compensation is subject to WV income tax.

You replied: I  owe 1088 in WV.

Those two statements match.

You get it back from MD (plus a little extra, withholding is never exact and frequently too much) and then you pay it to WV.
