I am in the review process using Turbo Tax. The name of the trust which was imported from my Fed Tax (and is ok for the feds) isn't ok for PA. How do I change it?

I'm doing the Turbo Tax review for PA state taxes.  I don't want to change the name of the trust on my Federal taxes since I've been filing under this name for 15 years now.  But PA wants the trust name in a different format.  Turbo Tax won't let me edit the field during review and I can't figure out how to change it on the PA taxes but not the Fed taxes (it's just a re-ordering of the words in the name).

You cannot override the name of the trust in TurboTax online, unfortunately.  You can only override and use the state-preferred name for the trust in the desktop version of TurboTax.

 

You will need to download the Desktop version and once the data is entered into the desktop version and you are satisfied that the information contained is the same as you have in the online version you can begin to make the change you need.

 

Once in the desktop version, click on State Taxes, and Pennsylvania should appear.  Once you are in the PA section go up towards the top right and click on "Forms". Once the forms are shown please follow these steps:

  1.  The forms list on the left will show all the forms that are part of your return.  Scroll down to the PA section and locate Est/Trust Wks first and click there.
  2. The worksheet should show the Estate name as you entered it on the Federal side.  Click in the line that contains the name of the trust.
  3. Click at the top left corner on "Edit", and then "override".  Type in the name that PA will accept.
  4. Once the worksheet has the trust renamed click on the left again right below the Wks and click on Sch J and repeat the override steps.

This should fix the naming issue and allow you to file your return.

Apologizes in advance for "jacking" this thread.

 

I am filing in NY.  TT is also flagging "Estate or Trust Name" I have as error.  My specific issue here is the Trust name I used is IDENTICAL to one on 2021 IT-205.  The 2021 was not filed with TT.  It makes no sense to change the trust name used for the sake of TT and making it inconsistent with 2021 info.

 

Please suggest how this can be rectified?

You can change the trust name only in the Turbo Tax desktop version, and still file. It would not require it to be changed outside of the Turbo Tax systems.
