I am filling out my state taxes for NY. I was a partial resident of NYC. In the 'New York City and Yonkers Information' section, is 'Your Wages Summary' box 18 of W2?

Box 18 on my w2 is $152 while box 1 is 63,000. I am confused what to put as summary of all wages in the NYC information section. I believe that it should be 152 as my taxable wages while a resident of NYC because I can not edit this information in turbo tax, but I want to make sure I am not doing something wrong.

This is likely correct, but it does depend.  Your NYC wages are the wages you earn within NYC as a NYC resident.  NYC does not tax a NYC nonresident, nor does NYC tax a NYC resident working outside of NYC.  If you reported your residency to your company (HR or payroll) timely, those numbers should be correct.  If you suspect that they are not, you should talk with them about a corrected W2 form because the information you have on your W2 is what NY State also has.

Hi, my problem is the same or similar.  I am an NYC part-year resident (full year resident of New York State).  I entered the dates properly in Turbotax under the state return.  The next screen lists my "Wages Summary-New York City" and I just can't figure out how Turbotax generated these figures for my various employers.  The numbers are a very small percentage of income and I think this cannot be right.  Where did this math come from and what should I do?  Thank you!

Note: some of the numbers seem to be the amount of tax I paid NYC on the W2 for that employer--not the income.  ??

One more note: Turbotax will not allow me to change the wage number, either in Easystep or Forms.  I'm using desktop Deluxe, Mac.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

How do I send you the code?  I can't figure out how to direct message you.

Just post the token number in a thread here and then that number is used to retrieve the diagnostic file from our system.  If possible a screenshot of the number is best so it will not be redacted.

Have you viewed the Taxpayer/spouse income allocation worksheet in forms mode for New York?  This worksheet matches the adjusted gross income on the New York return.  To view select forms in the top right hand corner.  Scroll down to New York and select TP/Sp Inc Alloc.

The Taxpayer Spouse Income Allocation may be correct, but that does not seem to be the problem.

Yes I am looking at Forms not EasyStep.  If I look at Change of City Resident Status form, it has numbers in Column B that I did not provide or choose, which are clearly totally wrong, and I don't know what Turbotax calculation led to them.

If I look at New York City/Yonkers Wages/Self-Employment Income Allocation form, the City Wages listed are wrong, and I don't know what calculation was used to arrive at these numbers.

In both of these forms I can't figure out what to do other than manually override, which I would prefer not to do.  I believe it is these forms, not the one you cite, that are causing a big undercharge on NYC taxes.  Help!

Box 18 on your W-2 is the local wages subject to income tax.  This amount is what is entered on the New York City Income Allocation worksheet.  Can you confirm that box 18 matches what was entered in the W-2?

I'm not quite clear on your question.  Box 18 on the W2s does NOT match the "City Wages" figures on the New York City/Yonkers Wages/Self-Employment Income Allocation.  I do understand what wages should be subject to NYC tax--my problem is that Turbotax is generating incorrect figures and I can't figure out why it is happening.

Hi, I think I have figured it out, and I'm posting in case this helps anyone else.  I had gone back and doublechecked my W2s, which are correct.  BUT: I imported them electronically using the control number, and two of the W2s (from different employers) imported Box 18 incorrectly.  The figure in Box 18 was the State Income Tax figure, repeated.  I re-imported one W2 and changed the other one manually.  Hopefully I can proceed from here!  I guess the lesson is to doublecheck every figure after importing.
