How to file part-time resident for three states?

I lived in 3 different states in 2023. Where do I list all 3 as the bio information page only allows me to enter only two?

I lived in Maryland through late May. Sold the house and moved to New York. I had my lease for just 5 days before I had to relocate and went to Virginia. I'm a W-2 employee and got paid in NY and my work did submit taxes to NY. All 3 states require state tax returns.

How and where do I enter all three states and accurately reflect time in each state? (I was only in NY for 5 days and roughly 6 months in both MD and VA).

You will be able to prepare three state returns in TurboTax. You will file part-year resident state tax returns for Virginia and Maryland. Since you only lived in New York for five days, you are not considered a resident so you will prepare a non-resident tax return for New York. Review NY Department of Taxation for more information.

Review your entries in the Personal Section to ensure that TurboTax has the correct info for the states.

  1. Launch Turbo Tax and select My Info
  2. Personal info summary screen will pop up.
  3. Select Edit by your name.
  4. Ensure that you have the correct answers for your state of residence and if you lived in another state. If you selected that you lived in another state, a new section will appear asking for your previous state of residence. Select the other state you lived in (Maryland).
  5. When you scroll through the screens, you will get to the screen Did you make money in any other states? Select Yes and select New York.

When you are ready to complete your state tax returns you will see all three states. Prepare the non-resident state tax return (New York) first, followed by the state that you moved from first (Maryland), then the state you live in now (Virginia).

Please review the TurboTax article How do I file a part-year state return? and How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return? for additional information.

Thank you for the link! Looking through their site, it appears even though it was a brief five day period, NY would consider us part-time residents since we did intend to have the apartment be our permanent home for one year and had signed a 12 month lease.
