How does TurboTax get the "subtractions from federal income" amount?

I am using Online Permier TurboTax.
I have to file taxes in 2 states. So when I am doing taxes for a state, TurboTax wants to know what portion of my federal income subtractions were for the state.
For example, the TurboTax screen says, "Subtractions from Federal Income" and shows $X for Federal and asks me to enter the state's portion.
The problem is, I cannot tell how TurboTax got the $X amount.
When I look at my Federal tax return, there is no amount that exactly matches $X so I am unable to determine which subtraction TurboTax is asking me about.
Is there a way to figure out exactly which subtractions from federal income is TurboTax asking about so I can accurately tell whether that subtraction was for state A or state B?
Thank you!

Can you clarify which state you are working on?  Someone will be able to look up the specific information.  Thanks!

Without seeing your screen, it will be difficult to determine which deductions are being referred to on your Colorado return. It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

The $2,000 subtraction is the College Invest Contribution.

You may have been having an issue with your CO return due to form availability.  All forms are updated now, so you should be able to update your software, review your state returns, and be good to go.

To do this in TurboTax Home & Business you can follow these steps:

  1. Within TurboTax, under Online in the black menu bar at the top of the screen click Check for Updates and follow the steps
  2. Open your tax return and go to the State Taxes tab
  3. Continue then Edit next to your CO state return
  4. Go over Colorado again and verify all your answers
  5. Proceed entering/reviewing your return.

Hi,

Unfortunately, the forms not being updated were not the  issue, as no update occurred.  I believe I discovered the 20k was somehow related to CO's 20k retirement exclusion.  Again, I sent the diagnostic file, as requested, it would have been nice to have someone actually analyze the problem.

Thanks for the non-assist,

Don
