How do you remove Form 2106 from an Alabama state return?

I am claiming reserve travel expenses on my federal return, which show up on federal Form 2106.  The state of Alabama requires a threshold of 2% for business expenses to be deductible for Alabama state tax purposes--which I won't meet.  I have tried several times to delete Form 2106 from my Alabama tax return, but it always returns.  This is also holding up me from filing my Alabama return as TurboTax wants me to wait until Alabama finalizes their version of Form 2106 (which will be in a few weeks)--and even then, it will be a print-only form vs. something I can e-file.  As I'll never hit the threshold for business expenses on Schedule A of my Alabama return, I just want to delete the reference to business expenses from my Alabama return and file my return via e-file.  Is it possible to do this?

Unfortunately, no, you can't delete the Form 2106 on your state return without deleting on your federal return as well (they are tied together).  To remove it from your state return, you would need to remove it from your federal return

You can file your federal return now and wait to file your Alabama return, however.

It seems like this is an error in how TurboTax was built.  If I never intend to claim an expense on my Alabama return, I should be able to delete the reference to that expense for just the state return.

I agree!  I had the same problem.  Your question and the (somewhat helpful) official answer did help me, though.  We took a standard deduction for federal, so I just deleted that itemized entry in federal-and therefore AL state- and am able to file immediately.  I'm not sure if that helps you, but thanks for helping me work around this silly flaw in TT. Good luck with your return!

So is TT saying we will be able to file alabama with the 2106 form after Federal is accepted? or do they mean approved? I just want to file alabama and get it over with. I have never had this problem before.

well my federal has been accepted and TT is saying that I can't e-file Alabama, and the form is not available for Alabama and  it says it will not be ready until the 02-28-2019. It has changed three times now. So what should I do?

Does anyone know why form 2106 is not able to be e-filed? I have never seen this before and I do have business expenses which I meet the 2% threshold, but my situation has been the same for 13 years now and I have always been able to e-file Alabama with all of my deductions. Is it a new form? Or is it a form that has been around for a long time and Alabama created a rule that prevents e-filing with a 2106 included? I have never had to mail in an Alabama return no matter what schedule C deductions I have had in the past. Very frustrating........

I am having the same problem can not file Alabama state taxes without form 2106 but Federal has been accepted and return has actually already been sent to me.  Still will not allow me to file my state taxes.

I ended up filing my federal return with TurboTax, and then using the State of Alabama's "My Alabama Taxes" (MAT) on-line system to file my Alabama return.  Yes, I had to input data again into the MAT on-line application--but it was free to use and my return was accepted by the state <24 hours after I submitted it on-line.  This may not work for everyone, but it was a good choice for me.

So glad you found a solution; thanks for sharing.  Maybe some others can skip the wait!

I'm having the same issue. They've changed the form ready date 3 times! Federal has been accepted & refunded. Still stuck on State due to Form2106. Get it together Alabama & TT.

I'm having the same issue also. I also tried to get on My Alabama Taxes and my account couldn't be created for some reason.

Once my federal return  hit the return date it finally let me file my Alabama taxes via e-file. I just kept logging on and trying to file every so many days and finally it took it.  It was once it hit the date that turbo tax had listed as my federal return would hit. Never had a problem until this year with form 2106 but wanted to repost that mine was able to finally be processed.

Wait for it to come back rejected because of form 2106 mine just did due to software update not available until Feb 28th. Be prepared! I think this is more of turbo tax issue than state issue.

I had to pay an additional charge of $46.00 to a tax adviser to correct the From 2106 error.  Why should I have to pay when TurboTax is responsible.  I want my money back!!
