How do you claim the recovery rebate credit?

I am not triggering the recovery rebate credit prompt despite being a US citizen, not claimed as a dependent and have a valid social. I also earned less than $75,000 in the year 2020 and did not receive any EIP in 2020. What is the issue for this and how can I get it resolved so that I can claim the credit?

To claim the stimulus (Recovery Rebate Credit) in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your account, and continue from where you left off.
  2. Click Federal in the left panel, then click Federal Review at the top.
  3. On the Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount page, click Continue.
  4. Go through the interview
  5. The TurboTax program will compute the stimulus amount you're entitled to, if any.
  6. Any stimulus amount you'll receive on your return will be displayed as a credit on line 30 of Form 1040.

Any economic impact payments you received are not taxable for federal income tax purposes, but they reduce your recovery rebate credit.

Im not getting the “Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount“ page. Thus it isn’t allowing me to access the interview

To get to the Recovery Rebate Credit section of your return, use the Search function and type in “stimulus”. You will see a “jump to” link at the top of the search results. By selecting this option, you can get to the RRC section quickly.

Here's a TurboTax article that explains the Recovery Rebate Credit.

I have tried to access it through that method as well but the page has not been triggered for me to enter the information. I have also read the article and tried all of the methods there and it has not worked either. That is why I deciding to reach out to the community for support. Is there anything else that I can try?

I wonder if something got checked or marked to make the program think you don't qualify. It just isn't logical otherwise.

One more thing to try:

You can force the program to trigger the Rebate Recovery Credit like this:

  1. go to Other Situations
  2. click Done.
  3. The next question will ask about payments received.

The program will determine the missing amount and add the Recovery Rebate to your refund.
