TurboTax automatically selects itemized deductions or the standard deduction on the New York tax return, based on your New York standard deduction and the itemized deductions you entered in the federal section. There is no way for you to directly select one or the other. Since you are taking the standard deduction on your federal return, you can make the New York return use the standard deduction by removing some of the itemized deductions that you entered in the federal section, to bring your New York itemized deductions down to less than your New York standard deduction. But if you do this, keep an eye on your New York refund or tax due and make sure you are actually coming out better. TurboTax selected itemized deductions for New York because it calculated that you would pay less New York tax that way.
